The Pays de la Loire brings together 5 French départements - Loire Atlantique, Maine et Loire, Mayenne, Sarthe and Vendée - each with their own history and culture. It is, therefore, extremely diverse, being shaped by influences from Brittany, the Loire Valley, and Western-Central France. A succession of beaches, alternating between rocky and sandy, stretches along the Atlantic coast of the Pays de la Loire: Côte Sauvage, north of the mouth of the Loire river, Côte de Jade between the Loire and the Isle of Noirmoutier, Côte de Lumière in Vendée. Two important islands belong to this region: Noirmoutier and l'île d'Yeu. Several marshes also punctuate the seashore. These are lands that have risen from the sea over the course of centuries: La Brière close to Saint Nazaire, the Breton Marsh north of the Vendée and the Poitevin marsh to the south. LA VENDEE La Vendée is the land of mogettes, small marsh beans that are served with Vendée ham.
